Hello, well another long bank holiday weekend all gone…desk flying again tomorrow. I guess it pays the bills, just.
I thought H for history today as I’m currently researching my family tree. I am hopefully going to find out where my family came from, I know I have to travel to discover the full tree, and would like to go back to at least the 1800’s.
For anyone who lives in the UK I would strongly recommend visiting the National Archive in Kew, London, it is one of my favourite places ever. It is massive and free, and you can use their expertise all day. They have so many records it’s wonderful that we can access all that history for nothing. The staff there really know their stuff too, don’t you just love an expert on hand to help.
My partner and I used the free internet sites accessible there to find people generations back, I could have spent another full day easily there is so much there. One distant relative has inspired me further, she was a single mum in the 1800’s her first daughter died then she married and had other children. I want to find out all there is, maybe write her story, she sounds such a survivor.
Please consider these archives a place to support along with your local libraries, and other similar resource worldwide; they hold our history which is the key to our future. Budget cuts must not be short-sightedly cutting these services without protection for our heritage. Try to call and borrow a book from your library, and encourage others too, ITS FREE! There are not many places you can say that of lately, and they hold so much value I dread their demise.
