MY SHORT STORY COLLECTION IS OUT! PAPERBACK OR EBOOK NOW AVAILABLE!

Hi, how about having a coffee with me? Too far to travel, well how about spending the coffee coins on my new short story collection instead?

My book ‘Knickers and Other Bitesize Flashes’ is on Amazon, and I’d love it if you bought a copy.

IT’S A BARGAIN!

It’s taken hard work, many hours writing, editing and preparing for publication, and I loved every minute, well almost!

I’d love to get your opinions, hopefully in the form of good reviews! Like actors, writers rely on good reviews to feed their business, and nourish their art.

OK, so basically it feels good to know all those hours poring over a keyboard at midnight were worth the effort.

How Your ‘5 a Day’ Can Help a Blogger (They’re not all millionaires, despite the rumours!)

You know when you ‘Google’ (other search engines are available) to find a fact, or check an ailment, the responses you find are often written by a blogger.

The headlines about bloggers making millions with no effort are usually fake news, or a sales pitch by someone building their own online business.

Good luck to them, some bloggers do make a great living, they work hard so deserve it.

HOWEVER most bloggers don’t make enough to live on, and never will.

Many bloggers don’t do the work to earn a fortune, most genuinely want to serve, support and help you, their audience.

Blogs exist across the globe for every topic you can imagine.

Self-help, educational study and mutual support groups, hobby groups and that isn’t even mentioning the travel, health, beauty and fashion blogs that you may be familiar with.

You know when you ‘Google’ (other search engines are available) to find a fact, or check an ailment, the responses you find are often written by a blogger.

When you read something online that you find informative, helpful or of value why not support the person who delivered it to you.

The Hero’s Journey Formula – How To Write A Successful Novel

Fiction writers, especially new ones, sometimes fight the idea of conforming to a genre or sticking with a formula. They think it may suppress their creativity, but this isn’t the case.

The Hero’s Journey Formula – How To Write A Successful Novel

You will be familiar with The Hero’s Journey, even if you haven’t heard of it by name.

Star Wars, Matrix and Jane Eyre are just a few of the classic stories that follow The Hero’s Journey formula.

One vital component of the correctly applied formula is that at the beginning of the story, the protagonist can not possibly imagine how much their life is to change. They’ll go on a journey, their ‘character arc.’ As the plot moves along, so does their transformation.

In Star Wars Luke Skywalker has his dreams but in the wildest of those dreams he couldn’t contemplate his vital role in the fight against Darth Vader (No spoilers here just in case you happen to be the one person on the planet who isn’t aware of the storyline.)

Jane Eyre travels through her life and against all odds survives and ends up in a life she too couldn’t possibly have dreamt of. (Again, I won’t spoil your enjoyment of my favourite book, please read it, it’s beautiful.)

Fiction writers, especially new ones, sometimes fight the idea of conforming to a genre or sticking with a formula. They think it may suppress their creativity, but this isn’t the case.

If I use this formula won’t my story be predictable?

By being formulaic it doesn’t mean it will be boring or predictable. It will however be written in a way that your fans know what to expect. Fiction book readers like a story they can expect to a certain extent. This is why publishers usually give you clues. In the blurb or reviews on a book cover it will often say things like ‘If you like Harry Potter…’ or ‘This writer is the new Baldacci…’ these pointers help your fans find your book in the mass market that is the modern day bookshelf, whether that be in a physical book store or a digital one.

I realised as I was working on one of my novels, that it would be much better suited as a TV show or even film. I visualised it so much whilst working on it I decided I should investigate the possibility of editing it into a screenplay.
It was at this point that I realised my study hadn’t included a huge amount about it, and so many people just ended conversations about screenwriting by saying things like, ‘Why bother, it’s all about who you know, not what you know.’
Whilst this could be true, the six steps from Kevin Bacon do seem to cover the whole of Hollywood and beyond, I don’t like being fobbed off or deterred so I decided to learn a bit more about before writing it off (sorry really rubbish unintentional pun)

A millionaire, a widow and a monk. A plane crash. In Part Star, Part Dust, the poignant and unforgettable debut novel by L.M. Valiram, three destinies are linked for eternity in a tale narrated by Time.

Meet Radha. She was left in a dumpster on the side streets of Mumbai to die as she was born; premature and undernourished. Meet Mira. At sixteen she is to marry a man she has never met before. On her wedding day, she carries a knife. And Gaurav. People say love is more important than money. But what happens when having one means you can’t have the other?

Scattered across India, these three are intertwined in unlikely ways: the flower shop owned by Mira’s husband employs Radha’s boyfriend, Mira and Gaurav become partners in business and most importantly, an ill-fated trip to Delhi links them all in death and life. Set in the sensuous worlds of Bombay and Delhi, Valiram’s dazzling novel explores the deep meanings of love, family, and time.

Plot:

The blurb just about covers this, it’s a literary novel, following various well drawn characters through their lives. It is a fairly short book (the frustration with ebooks is that you can’t ‘feel’ it’s weight)

I listened to this audio book in my car, it made for a really entertaining drive. It could be a self-obsessed depressing subject but it certainly isn’t, nor is it promising riches to anyone who wants them. Pat Flynn describes his naive optimism when starting out in his chosen career. Anyone with a brain should watch this TV programme!

Perhaps what I found so profound about his work, was how art sustains him.

Anyone with a brain should watch this TV programme! Stroke is not the end.

I never understand people who don’t have a television. I’m a writer, I love books, I love the written word and the tactile nature of paper pages turning. However I also value good television and some is excellent. This is.

This programme brought me to tears.

Andrew Marr is a TV presenter, writer, poet, political analyst and as we find out a frustrated artist who admits he probably lacked the bravery to attend art college as he would have loved to do.

My mother and her sister both died of strokes so for me this was of personal interest. If genetics have anything to do with it, this could be the way I go to the next plain or whatever lies ahead.

I’ve often watched Andrew Marr at his work, often presenting a variety of programmes on TV. I truly hadn’t appreciated just how badly the stroke had affected his movement and quality of life. Just holding a glass is an achievement for him.

He dives right in to all the treatments, the causes and terribly sad impacts of a stroke. He shows obvious frustration at how the treatments are to be sought out and paid for privately. However he is honest, enquiring and clear that he wants to learn, not inspire pity for his situation. He admits he worked too hard, and probably still does.

My mother’s treatment after her stroke was to be stuck in a cot-bed, to pay for it she had to sell her home. She was stuck in limbo, often not knowing who was around her, until a second stroke carried her from us. My aunt was thankfully saved this humiliation.

We all have to die of something as my dad wisely said on his death bed. However the stroke, or as Andrew says, the first stroke doesn’t always kill you, the second might. It’s how we learn to deal with the first one and its impacts that is so fascinating.

Now don’t get me wrong, this programme wasn’t depressing, not even sad.

A Page Turner Thriller! No Spoiler Book Review – Love, Lies & Clones, Joynell Schultz

I had a vision of ‘Bones’ Temperance Brennan, you know the character created by Kathy Reichs. She’s not as ‘detached’ but certainly similar.

June never asked to be cloned from her mother’s DNA. She didn’t ask for the faulty heart that beats in her chest either. She made a life for herself as a college professor, but what she really wants is the same as everyone else: a human connection. But how can she connect to someone when her heart’s next beat could be the last?

Her estranged father shows up on her doorstep, warning her that he’s being forced back into the illegal human cloning world and she’s in danger, but she dismisses him as paranoid. That’s until he disappears. The police are not prepared to confront a conspiracy this large, especially with a serial killer on the loose.

When approached by an AWOL soldier, insisting her father’s disappearance is linked to his brother’s odd behavior, she doesn’t trust him. She’s been taught her whole life not to trust anyone.

With time running out, she must avoid abduction attempts, untangle the web of lies, and above all else, hide her taboo origins.

Can June trust someone with her secret… and her heart

Plot:

This is a thriller with a hint at romance and embedded geekiness throughout. The scientist has to abandon her work to find her estranged ‘creator’ father.

This story has just the right balance of romance to keep it on the right side of the thriller genre. Any geeks out there will love the cloning science throughout. It’s slightly futuristic with electric self drive cars etc but hey, we’re there now aren’t we?

It’s obvious the writer knows the topic, although I’m no expert so I just guessed it was accurate. If not it was really convincing!

The characters really engage the reader, which isn’t always the case with thrillers.
